🌟 Victoria Memorial Hall: A Timeless Tribute to an Empire


Standing majestically at the heart of Kolkata, the Victoria Memorial Hall is more than just a monument; it's a symbol of the city's colonial past and architectural grandeur. Commissioned by Lord Curzon in memory of Queen Victoria after her death in 1901, this iconic structure was envisioned as a tribute to the British Empire's zenith in India. 


🏛️ Architectural Marvel


Designed by Sir William Emerson, the memorial showcases a blend of British and Mughal architectural styles, often referred to as Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture. Constructed from pristine white Makrana marble—the same used for the Taj Mahal—the building features a central dome rising to 56 meters, flanked by four subsidiary domes and octagonal chhatris. Atop the central dome stands the 16-foot-tall bronze statue of the Angel of Victory, holding a bugle and a laurel wreath, symbolizing triumph.

The Victoria Memorial houses 25 galleries, including the Royal Gallery, National Leaders Gallery, and the Calcutta Gallery. Its vast collection boasts over 28,000 artifacts, encompassing oil paintings, watercolors, sketches, rare books, manuscripts, coins, and more. Noteworthy exhibits include paintings by Thomas and William Daniell, Tipu Sultan’s personal war diary, and a manuscript copy of the Ain-i-Akbari.

Spread over 64 acres, the meticulously maintained gardens surrounding the memorial offer a tranquil escape from the city's hustle. Designed by Lord Redesdale and Sir David Prain, the gardens feature ornamental pools, walkways, and an array of statues, making it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.  


🎆 Light and Sound Show


One of the highlights of the Victoria Memorial is the evening Son-et-Lumière (Light and Sound) show. This captivating presentation narrates the history of Kolkata, bringing to life the city's rich past. The show is held in both Bengali and English, with timings varying seasonally.  


♿ Accessibility and Inclusivity


In recent years, efforts have been made to make the Victoria Memorial more accessible. Wheelchair-friendly pathways have been introduced, and sign language interpretations are available for certain programs. The museum also plans to incorporate Braille descriptions and audio guides to cater to a diverse audience.

Museum Hours: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM (Closed on Mondays and select national holidays)


Garden Hours: 5:30 AM to 7:00 PM daily


Entry Fees:


Museum: ₹10 for Indian citizens, ₹150 for foreign nationals


Gardens: ₹4 per person



Light and Sound Show Tickets: ₹10 (Bengali), ₹20 (English)

Located at 1, Queens Way, Kolkata, the Victoria Memorial is easily accessible via various modes of transportation. The nearest metro stations are Maidan and Rabindra Sadan. Buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws are readily available, and for a scenic route, one can opt for a ferry ride to nearby ghats like Princep Ghat.

        Internet                            Hazarduari Palace, earlier known as the Bara Kothi, is located in the campus of Kila Nizamat in Murshidabad, West Bengal. It is situated near the bank of river Ganga. It was built in the nineteenth century by architect Duncan Macleod, under the reign of Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
